If you’ve been disappointed with the lack of winter weather this season, you aren’t the only one. So you can understand that I, a Rexburg engagement photographer, was a little nervous about finding the best winter wonderland spot for this newly engaged couple. Luckily, after a little bit of driving, there were hills covered with a snow duting up in Ashton. And by just going a little farther, I found this place.

There’s just something undeniably magical about winter engagement sessions here in Idaho. The quieter landscapes, the soft textures, and especially the light — winter light has a way of wrapping everything in calm. This recent winter engagement session was the perfect reminder of why I love photographing couples during this season.
From the moment we started, the light stole the show. Low on the horizon and beautifully diffused, it created the kind of glow that I often only get to capture in winter. Winter may be understated, but it knows how to show up in all the right ways.

Winter engagement sessions offer a slower pace and a more intimate experience. Locations feel more private, schedules are more flexible, and couples often feel less rushed. Without the distractions of peak season crowds, it becomes easier to focus on connection.
The cooler temperatures also invite natural closeness. Hands tucked into pockets, shared warmth, quiet laughs — these moments translate beautifully on camera. Winter has a way of encouraging presence, and that always shines through in photos.

One of the most overlooked benefits of winter sessions is the light. The sun sits lower in the sky, which means softer shadows and longer stretches of golden tones. The snow reflects up onto faces. Even on overcast days, winter light tends to be flattering and even, creating images that feel calm and romantic.
For this session, the light filtered gently across the landscape, highlighting natural skin tones and adding depth without harsh contrast. It was subtle, natural, and absolutely perfect for an engagement session.

Winter styling doesn’t have to mean bulky layers or sacrificing comfort for photos. Neutral tones, textured fabrics, and intentional layering photograph beautifully. Cozy knits, structured coats, and simple accessories add interest without overpowering the connection between the couple.
Movement matters too. Walking together, leaning in, and allowing natural interactions create warmth that goes beyond the temperature. The goal is always to feel like yourselves — just documented in beautiful light.

My approach to engagement sessions is simple: create space for couples to relax and be present. You don’t need to know how to pose or perform for the camera. I guide gently, allowing moments to unfold naturally while making sure the light and setting support the story.
This winter engagement session was filled with quiet laughter, soft movement, and genuine connection. It felt easy, and I think the images show that.

If you love softer light, calmer locations, and an experience that feels intentional and unhurried, winter might be the perfect season for your engagement photos. Idaho winters offer stunning backdrops, even in their simplicity, and the light alone makes the season worth considering.
Whether you’re planning a winter wedding or simply drawn to the season’s quiet beauty, a winter engagement session allows your story to be captured in a way that feels authentic and timeless.
